Right. I'm unsure exactly how I want to do it, so I'm just going to outline several possabilities as to how things would work.
First and formost: The premise. This is a LotR forum, so the game will probably end up being Lord of the Rings based. But it dosent have to. It could be based on a sci-fi/fantasy realm similar to LotR, but not.
Character creation would work like this:
We'll just do basic human because they require the least amount of thought on my part. I'm thinking we do it in classic D20 system, but we could also do it another way an RPG I play works, and seems to run fairly well.
D20 method:
You start out with a couple basic attributes, and those are, in no particular order:
Constitution: Health and endurance
Dexterity: Phsyical agility (for defense, climb checks, ect) and attack accuracy.
Will: Mental powers. Would add to wizard powers, resistance to wizard powers, ect.
Charisma: Your ability to persuade/force people to do things
Intel: How smart your character is. Higher intel characters have better skills, and more of them.
Strength: Duh. Adds to damage when you biatchslap people, and various other strong things.
I think that's all of it. For a human you'd start out with a base 10 in each of those skills, and 18 points to apply any way you see fit. For every 2 points you put into each ability, it adds +1 bonus to that ability. So my human looks like this so far.
Charisma: (12) +1
Constitution: (14) +2
Dex:(14) +1
Intel: (15) +2
Strength: (12) +1
Will: (11) +0
Then calculate your defense, ranged and melee attack bonus, skill bonuses, ect. There is alot to go on here with the D20 system. So I'll have to simplify it alot. To much work to do with just an interest post.
You could also pick a career or prestiege class and that requires certain things from you. (for example, a human soldier might need more strength than a human bartender. But way less charisma than the bartender needs, ect.)
Weapons would look something like this
[Random Sword]
Damage: 6
Accuracy: 70%
Blocking Level: 70%
Price: blah
Salvage Value: blah
I'm contemplating how abattle would work out, but I think as you developed proficiency (used it alot) in a weapon you'd unlock bonus abilities, like great cleave. +4 damage (+ strength modifier) and character takes -2 to defense on next round, ect.
Wizard powers would work much the same way. If you picked a magical character you'd get 'wizard points' (based on will and intel bonus) you'd use to pay for the attack. For example
[Frozen Wrath]
Effect: Freeze 1 enemy for 3 rounds of combat
Cost: 3
So if you just cast this power and you have 12 total wizard points, you now only have 9 points to spend this battle.
So you'd pick your career and character, and then head out into the world to do what ever you want. Post an 'event' for example:
(Title field) A shortcut to mushrooms [Moderator]
(subject field) "Bilbo Baggins was walking along one day, when he decided he wanted to look for some mushrooms. So, Bilbo walked out into the field and started looking for some 'shrooms."
Then a game mod would reply, telling you if you found any, how many, special properties, and anything else they want to happen to you. You do not have to be a good writer to play. but it helps.
The D20 method is alot more complicated than the other way, but it also allows for a much more "realistic" aod customizable approach to the game. The other method is alot more easy to learn, but it lacks more of the customization. I'll post the other method tomorrow.
